History, description, mission statement etc.
National and University Library was founded in 1607, within Jesuit College. In 1776 the Jesuit College Library was affiliated to the Royal Academy of Sciences (Regia Scientiarum Academia). With the foundation of the University in Zagreb in 1874, the name was changed into the University Library. During the 19th century the Library took complete responsibility for fulfilling its dual national and university functions, which were expressed in collection building policy. In 1883 the library moved to new premises built for University. In 1913, the construction of the new building situated at Marulic Square was finished. After less than 80 years, on May28th, 1995, the Library moved to the new building, second in the 20th century.

Special collections and services

Collection of Rare Books and Manuscripts contains 187 incunabula, 67,000 rare books, 142,113 manuscripts

The acquisition of material from special collections comes from donations or purchasing and partly also from legal deposit.

Prints and Drawing Collection holds prints and drawings, posters, leaflets and postcards

Collection of maps holds rare maps

Music Collection collects printed music manuscripts and audio cassettes and CD's

International Permanent Exhibition of Publications (ISIP) is department within the National and University Library with independent status. The main activity is to exhibit the literature collected from publishers covering general knowledge, culture and arts. By traditional cooperation with foreign publishers from all continents ISIP acquires foreign scientific and technical publications free of charge.

Collection of official publications collects, processes and makes available all kinds of official publications of international organisation and foreign governments. The collections comprise also Croatian official publications, publications of the Council of Europe, and official deposits of governments due to the contracts

Collection of Dissertations and Master thesis - National and University Library holds theses from all four Croatian universities.

All the material from special collections could be consulted only in their reading rooms.

Computerized cataloguing started in early eighties. CROLIST bibliographic database contains 812,782 bibliographic records. The catalogue of the National and University Library, (WebPAC) is accessible from web pages, as well as national bibliographies, and catalogue of ISIP.

Crolist - The Crolist webopac has two search possibilities:
  • simple search
  • advanced search
. Access points are by: keyword, personal name, title and word from the title and language. In advanced search Boolean operators are used with Help and Examples screens. Access is free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Search commands are menu driven or web search options.

Use, loans and copying policies

User groups
The NUL is accessible to all users over eighteen years of age, but they have to register for the reader card. Graduates from the secondary school are allowed to use only the reading rooms and other services but on site.
Use restrictions
The Library holding the functions of the national and university has some restrictions regarding the regulations for borrowing the books.
Excluded from borrowing outside the library are:
  • books by Croatian authors, in Croatian, published in the Republic of Croatia, about the Croats and about the Croatia, if the library doesn't hold at least two copies besides the deposit copy (archive)
  • books by Croatian authors, in Croatian, about the Croats or Croatia published abroad, if the library has only one copy
  • the materials which are holdings of library's special collections
  • materials being a part of collections of Dissertation and Masters Theses as well as Official Publications
  • learning materials from Croatian universities
  • all editions of foreign books printed before 1950
  • books containing illustrations, maps, sketches
  • reference books
  • books in big or small formats
  • newspapers and serials
  • special editions
  • compact disks
  • microforms

    1. Personal loans: no additional charges

    2. ILLs: from BLDSC the price is 170 SKK (local currency) (4.50 US$), from SUBITO the price is 80 SKK (2.15 US$), from other libraries the price is 100 SKK (2.50 US$).

    Price of copies
    1. Copies made by the library and sent to patrons: The copies of A4 format cost 0,50 SKK , while the price for the copies of A3 format is 1,00 kn.

    2. Copies made by patrons: The copies of A4 format cost 0.50 SKK (0.01 US$), while the price for the copies of A3 format is 1.00 SKK (0.02 US$).

    3. ILLs: The price for copies from BLDSC regardless of number of pages is 70 SKK (1.90 US$), SUBITO copies from 1-10 pages by email is 35 SKK (0.95 US$) plus copying per page, articles over 20 pages are 45 SKK (1.20 US$), if the articles are delivered by email the price is 25 SKK (0.65 US$) (in .pdf)

    Other remarks on patron policies
    For the purposes of International library loan there is exception to the rule which allows loan for all Croatian books published in Croatia after 1945 if the library has at least one copy beside the deposit copy.


    Other activities and remarks

    National and University Library is a member of CENL, and is active in Working groups on Performance Indicators as well as MACS and several other projects. It is represented also on Gabriel- Gateway of European National Libraries. It is also a member of CDNL. Library holds institutional membership in IFLA (Sections for: National Libraries, University Libraries, Bibliography, Rare Books and Manuscripts, Preservation and Conservation and Information Technology).It has a member in the Standing Committee on UNIMARC, CERL and ELAG as well as a membership in Austrian Institute for South and Southeast Europe, in Vienna.
