History, description, mission statement etc.
Tallinn Pedagogical university library is the national resource library in Estonia in educational sciences. It acquires, stores and makes accessible primary and secondary sources of information in the relevant subject areas as comprehensively as possible and provides sources for all specialities taught in the university on the level of Bachelor`s and other academic degree programs. The library stocks includes nearly half a million books and about 200 current serial titles. The library is open to the students and faculty of the university as well as to teachers all over Estonia.
The library was founded in 1919 as the library of Teacher Training College. The library has taken part in all the reorganizations and name changes of this educational establishment. It has been a typical school library that provided students with textbooks. During 1952-1992 its host institution was called Tallinn Pedagogical Institute that had no academic degree programs. If graduates wished to acquire an academic, they had to do it in Moscow or Leningrad, although later on, in some fields, it was also possible in Tartu. The Institute became a university in 1992. Since 1993 the library has been supervised by a council made up of the prorector, representatives of all the faculties and three librarians (the chief librarian, the head of the acquisitions and the IT-coordinator). It has designed its own acquisition policy and participates in devising the acquisition strategy for all the academic libraries of Estonia, according to which our library is on the "A-level" in the field of educational sciences.
